Japan’s earthquake and subsequent tsunami has left many babies and toddlers without their mothers, who may have been breastfeeding them. Also with physical and mental stress and malnutrition with the crackdown on food rations, many mothers stopped lactating.
These babies urgently need milk to survive.
Ready-to-feed liquid formula is preferred over powdered formula due to the current situation in Japan. Many regions still lacking life line and water supply is extremely limited to make milk from formula. Even if they are able to make milk, they don’t have enough water supply to wash the milk bottles. With radiation problem and sanitary standpoint, Ready-to-feed liquid formula is best suited in this circumstance.
To this day, no companies make Ready-to-feed liquid formula in Japan – they manufacture and sell only powdered formula in Japan. Therefore, the only way to distribute ready-to-feed liquid formula is to ask foreign companies to send them to Japan. Receiving formula may be these babies’ only chance for survival. While individual donations of formula are welcomed, it will have a much larger impact if we can get the formula companies involved.
In twitter, a Japanese mother lives in Finland tweeted that it would be nice if she can send this formula to Japan. Right after her tweet, a formula company in Finland and Finland Airline company responded and with a Japanese governor’s help, they sent 2000 Ready-to-feed liquid formula to Japan.
In the US, we have 2 large companies manufacture Ready-to-feed liquid formula. At this point, both companies replied indicating they would donate financially, but not ready to help by sending their products.
Thinking of mothers and babies suffering and struggling in Japan, some of us are not willing to give up a hope and trying to reach these formula companies again asking them to consider sending their products to Japan.

被災地の多くのママ達が精神状態やホルモンがの影響などで母乳が出なくなってしまっています。
粉ミルクは、水不足や水の安全性の問題で作りにくく、また、粉ミルクを作っても哺乳瓶を洗ったりするのが難しいのが現状のようです。
日本では法律で禁止されていますが、アメリカでは、既に出来上がったミルクが一回のミルクの量でボトルになった液体ミルクと言って、これに飲み口をつけるだけで簡単に赤ちゃんにあげられるとても便利なものがあります。
フィンランドの日本人のお母さんがツィッターでこれを日本に送れないものだろうかとつぶやいたところ、なんとフィンランドのミルク会社とフィンランド航空の協賛と小池百合子議員の協力を得て、2000個のミルクが日本に届けられたそうです。
アメリカにはとっても大きな二つの会社がこの液体ミルクを作っています。とある日本人ママがメールをしてみたところ、義援金を贈ることで支援するからとやんわり断られてしまったそうです。
それでも、現在母乳やミルクが不足している赤ちゃんのために、アメリカの粉ミルク会社に液体ミルクの寄付をお願いする請願書を改めて作成中ということで、5000のサインが必要だということです。
